Ed came into cycling after 2002 following 30 years in athletics; or to be more accurate – a low impact sport was required after numerous surgery interventions over time on both knees, legs and ankles, probably the effect of heavy road training and 200 plus marathons, numerous ultras and 24 Hour track events.
His last race was in Brittany to pick up the essential Grands Vins de Bordeaux as well as to run in Nantes in their “France v England” event in November 2002. A 50km event with 30 athletes: 29 Frenchmen and … Ed. So after that event it was with 2 wheels for the adventure continued with Paris-Brest-Paris done in 2003 (65 hours), and having a need to “shop” in France and Belgium a love affair with the Ronde (8 times), Paris Roubaix (1), Liege – Bastogne – Liege (3).
After a year on the bike Ed found out that there was the Mersey Roads Club 24 which led him to hear about Time Trials. Road racing as a regular lantern rouge/back marker ceased to be replaced by time trials. Other than 3 years enforced absence due to annual RTA’s in 2008, 09, 10 and cancer in 2011 sorted out in 2012 the Mersey has been a favoured event each year.
