Clare bought her first road bike at the age of 41 with view to doing a sprint triathlon or two to fight off the onset of old age – thought it might be a bit embarrassing to compete on a rusty mountain bike with a baby seat on the back. Previous road bike experience was confined to a commuter bike which she rode as a student, which was assembled from a frame found in her parents’ garage when they bought their house, and a back wheel rescued from a ditch at the bottom of the garden.
Clare dabbled in triathlon for a few years. Discovered that she quite like cycling, and being decidedly average at swimming, and downright awful at running, the logical progression (?) was to time trialling (lured in by the promise of post race cake). Clare claims that she still don’t have much of a clue about cycling, but have an ever growing mountain of second hand kit, and can often be found hiding from the children in the garage on the turbo under the guise of doing a bit of training.
